Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

OK so this band is amazing. I have to admit that I've never listened to any of their other records, namely because I've read that this is there happiest and least drone-y. I'm not the BIGGEST metal fan, but the more avant-garde metal gets, the more I get into it. I won't spend a lot of time on this blog on metal, but there's simply too many good albums out there for me to ignore the genre completely just because it isn't typically associated with creativity or diversity.

This album (Earth's The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull) is something otherworldly. I can't explain how it makes me feel but it's one of those feelings you know every repeated listen in the future will bring back to you in full force. I've only had this album for a little over a year, and every time I listen to it I feel a sense of nostalgia. It creates an unmached mood in me that you'll have to feel to believe. Yes, it's a slow album, and yes, it has moments that are meant to move at an ice berg's pace, but it also has moments of unbridled joy. This is what makes this the only earth album I've ever listened to. That feeling of the first days of summer, or feeling the wind on a drive home from swimming in a lake.

It's hard to call Bees a metal record, in the common sense of the term. I'm no professor of genres, but I'm not sure I would call this metal at all. Whatever it is (and it doesn't really matter right?) it's remarkable. I listen to this just about every time I write a philosophy paper or read for my philosophy classes, just because it creates a great backdrop for deep thought. You should really do whatever you can to download or purchase this album, and if, for some godforsaken reason you don't like it at first, at least give it the benefit of a second listen, especially Engine of Ruin. Ok now go get it boy!
